    Brits have boring fruit bowls – and don’t fancy a change

    The majority of Brits don’t deviate from fruits that were popular in the 1960s

    What's in your fruit bowl? © RexApples, oranges, bananas and grapes are the only fruits included in 78 per cent of people’s fruit bowls, according to a study by Tropicana.

    A third of Brits (32 per cent) say they’re nervous to try new fruits, while 18 per cent put their lack of imagination down to not knowing how to prepare exotic fruit.

    For those who do experiment with new fruits, 33 per cent say it’s the health benefits that motivate them the most, with 11 per cent regularly buying 'super fruits' from the supermarket.

    "Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy balanced diet is important to ensure we get all the nutrients we need,” said nutritionist Juliet Kellow.

    "People who don't eat fruit and vegetables regularly are at greater risk of getting several common cancers.”

    The study also revealed some startling fruit-eating habits amongst young people.

    The research found that 12 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds never eat any fruit - putting themselves at risk of illness.

    A further eight per cent of this age group only eat fruit on 'special occasions' and just 33 per cent say they eat a piece of fruit every day.

    The figures also revealed the differences between fruit consumption across the UK.

    Who eats the least?

    According to the study, people in the North West eat the least fruit, with 12 per cent never touching it.

    Who likes the most variety?

    In the North East, however, 23 per cent of people eat six different types of fruit per week – way above the UK average of 10 per cent.

    And who has the most exotic fruit bowl?

    Brits in the South East are more likely to buy exotic fruit after they’ve tried it abroad, with 40 per cent doing so – and 46 per cent of respondents in Wales said they’d buy exotic fruit if it had health benefits.

    The study also found that those aged 55 and over are most health conscious, with 72 per cent saying they tuck into some fruit at least once a day.
