Botox in pregnancy - Why Kim Kardashian's right to say no

Kim Kardashian has denied having Botox injections during her pregnancy - with good reason

Kim Kardashian has unsurprisingly hit back at allegations made in a US magazine that she has been having Botox injections during her pregnancy.

The reality TV star, who is seven months pregnant with her first child with boyfriend Kanye West, has denied all suggestions that she's addicted to the wrinkle-reducing injections, calling the suggestion 'absurd and NOT true!'. And it's not surprising - Botox is actually a poison and is as such, definitely not recommended in pregnancy.

There has been limited research into how Botox might affect a growing baby - for obvious reasons. But as the injections are toxic (they are made of the poison onabotulinumtoxinA or Botulinum Toxin A), the general advice is 'better to be safe than sorry'.

To back up the cautious line, studies in rodents and rabbits have suggested that Botox can be dangerous for unborn babies. Animals born to mothers who had been given injections of the numbing substance were found to have the toxin in their bodies at birth. Many had low birth weights and other complications including problems with bone development and miscarriage were also noted.

Botox for cosmetic reasons should be avoided in pregnancy but there are some medical uses of the substance that you should speak to your doctor about, such as treatment for migraines or MS. Often this treatment is halted during pregnancy and can be reintroduced post-partum.

One bonus to pregnancy that you may not have considered is that your skin may not really need any help from Botox to appear smooth and line-free. During pregnancy, your body retains more fluid and the skin often appears plumper and younger as the skin cells contain more water.

So for those nine months, it's recommended you rely on your natural glow and if breastfeeding, speak to your health professional before having any invasive or filler treatments.
