Struck by the extra holes on the sides of their trainers, the clever people at Illumiseen launched a full-scale investigation into the anomoly and discovered that they're actually supposed to be used to keep your ankles firmly in place.

Labelled a "heel lock", the technique is supposed to guard trainer-wearers from blisters and heel injuries by, you guessed it, locking your heel firmly in place.

By forming some clever loops and on either side of the foot, runners and gym-goers can tighten their laces in a circular 'lock' to stop their feet rubbing against the back of their trainers.
