Valentines Makeup Tutorial: Natural Flirt vs Romantic Glamour

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and whether you’re going on a hawt date or having a cosy night in, there’s no time like the present to start planning your makup look!

Today’s beauty tutorial shows you two striking ways to do Valentine’s makeup but they’re very different. Which one will you try?

Look 1 is a natural, flirtatious look with lots of lashes and a pops of pink, the other is a glamourous movie-siren look with bold red lips and high impact eyes.

Look One – The Natural Flirt

Step 1.

For a radiant looking glow, apply your base and then dot a highlighter over the tops of your cheeks. I’m using Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base as it’s easy to apply under or over makeup.

Step 2.

Use a sharp brow pencil to draw small, light strokes in the direction of your natural brow shape. I recommend the Clinique Superfine Liner for Brows as it’s incredibly thin and isn’t too obvious – perfect for brow beginners.

To keep your brows looking less ‘drawn on’ – run a brow mascara through your arches. This part is crucial for those of you who aren’t blessed with bushy brows, the gel clings to individual hairs and makes them look fuller.

Step 3, The Eyes.

I’m using a bronze gold colour which provides depth and dimension, without adding too much colour. This is probably the easiest eyeshadow I’ve ever had to apply – just smudge a cream eyeshadow over lids with your finger. I’m using Maybelline Colour Tattoo in On And On Bronze.

For a bit of extra definition, run a thin line of liquid eyeliner as close to the lash as possible. I have been in love with this Stila Stay All Day Eyeliner ever since London Fashion Week AW15 - the tip is incredibly fine and results in a perfect line every time. (Oh yeah, and it’s waterproof in case you’ve got any blubby feelgood films on the agenda!)

Step 4.

As I mentioned, the emphasis for this look is on the lashes, so curl your lashes, apply mascara and repeat!

Today I’m trialling the BD Trade Secrets Va Va Boom mascara and I’m quite impressed – the brush fans out at both ends for some great lift and volume. Just be careful not to smudge your eyeshadow.

If, like me, you wish you were blessed with more in the lash department, add two individual lashes in the corners for a bit of extra flutter.

Use tweezers to get in closer, look down into a mirror and rest your elbow on the table for extra accuracy.

Finally, apply a coral pink cream blush to the apples of your cheeks and as much pink lipgloss as you can handle!

Forget about brushes, your fingers help to get the natural flush effect. I’m using the cream blush and lipgloss from this BD Secrets Love Lips Love Cheeks palette (you saw it here first, it’s launching later this month at Tesco!)

The Finished Look

This look is all about ‘full-makeup makeup’ and for a flawless base you need to have high coverage foundation.

For the perfect base, powder foundation is a great choice – apply with a sponge for smooth, flawless skin in seconds. I’m using Shu Uemura Face Architect Powder Foundation.

Step 2

The brows for this look are bolder, with more emphasis on an angled arch. Use a flat brush to sketch the shape of the brow with powder.

I like to trace a raised brow to get the angle right. If you’re not confident with this part, use a brow stencil otherwise you might end up looking permanently surprised!

Step 3.

For me, smokey eyes are always on the agenda for evening wear but I’m not a fan of having to use a million products. I appy Dior Fusion Mono, a shimmering cream-to-mattte eyeshadow, all the way up to the brow bone and in the socket.

To blend and add a soft-focus smoke, buff a lighter shade around the edges from the socket outwards.

Step 4.

Add black eyeliner for some definition, any kind of eyeliner will do for this look but I prefer liquid or gel. Continue to line under the eye with the darkest eyeshadow that you’ve used.

Be careful not to go all the way to the inner corner as this will make your eyes look smaller.

Step 5.

Fake some serious cheekbones but sucking in your cheeks and applying a matte bronzer (like Benefit Hoola) where the shadows are.

Step 6.

Finally, apply your hottest shade of red lipstick for an amplified pout. The glossier the lipstick, the better! I’ve used L’Oreal Color Riche Lipstick in 502 - it’s a glorious unashamedly red shade which suits most skintones.

And there we go – the finished Romantic Glamour makeup look!
