How To Wear Layers: A GOTG Guide

There are 3 essential components to the ‘perfect’ winter layer, a base layer, a mid layer and a shell. A BASE LAYER has to be kept very close to your skin to that it can create a thin layer of warmth against your body. Pieces like this Black Scoop Back Bodysuit - £10 via Missguided - are a great purchase as it is not cotton so won’t soak up sweat, stay wet and suck heat away from your body during the course of the day. Now that that is done and dusted, it’s time to add your Mid-layer.

The MIDLAYER is acts as insulation and will bounce any body heat that slip through your base layer back to your body. The HEATTECH range from Uniqlo is a mid-layering dream, and is definitely something you should check out.

Last but not least we have the SHELL aka your favourite coat aka that piece of clothing that protect you from the wind and the rain (sometimes).

Now that the ground rules have been established, here are some of the ways the Girl On The Ground Bloggers style their winter layers.

Our Girl On The Ground Zoe (Face Value Beauty Blog) likes to keep cosy whilst also looking smart for the office. Monochrome is a great way to look chic and is an easy way to keep your layers low-key and coordinated. Keep the look interesting by adding a few colour accents, a statement bag or a bold piece of jewellery.

Get the look by layering a pussy-bow blouse or a shirt with an interesting collar under your favourite black jumper. Or you can cheat and just use a shirt bib over your favourite midlayer!

Long coats aren’t for everyone, Girl on the Ground blogger Charlotte (aka The Goodowl) shows you how it’s possible to wear your favorite jacket even in winter.

To be able to rock that short statement jacket you’re going to need to invest in some toasty layers. The 70s made a epic comeback on the catwalks this season with roll necked jumpers and denim taking center stage. Wear this trend through till winter by mixing in some ultra thermal jumpers, like this grey Alpaca jumper from Mango(Similar on sale £17.45) and this fitted black roll neck from ASOS.

If you want to layer up but hate having your arms and elbows restricted take a tip from Blogger & Girl On The Ground; Annie Amusu (aka Epiphannie), and wear a sleeveless tunic as a Mid-layer. A Sleeveless Cream Knitted Tunic - £35 via River Island will still trap your body heat but now you are free to reach for that jar on the top shelf without feeling like a wooden puppet
