Alfonso Cuarón's new space odyssey 'Gravity' is earning itself universal praise, many critics calling it a groundbreaking piece of cinema.

The 'Children of Men' and 'Harry Potter' director is said to have broken boundaries with the special effects used, and a new set of pictures - unveiled in Entertainment Weekly - give a tantalising glimpse of how he did it.

Using underwater photography and all manner of contraptions, Cuarón and his cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki – who has also worked with the likes of Terrence Malick and the Coen Brothers – have something Oscar-worthy on their hands.

Set entirely in space, the thriller sees George Clooney and Sandra Bullock battling to survive following a catastrophic accident during a space walk.

James Cameron has already called the film 'the best space movie ever', while critics have lauded the film with praise.

So far it's riding an impressive 95% 'fresh' rating on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, following its premiere in Venice, where it opened the annual film festival.

It's due out in the UK on November 8.
