Keep yourself looking fabulous this summer, without overloading your face with make-up. You may be off to the beach, exploring a city or keeping yourself busy, but wherever you go, don't forget to pack these beauty essentials that won't break the bank.
Without trying to sound like a concerned mother, first make sure you're topping up your suncream every hour. You can buy face-specific suncream, which is matte, anti-wrinkle and won't cause you to break out. I like SunSense Daily Face SPF50+ Invisible Tint Finish Sunscreen (£12.49, Amazon).
Maybelline Mascara Volume Express Colossal Waterproof (£6.99, Superdrug) is great value for money. You get lovely, long lashes and not a hint of smudge - perfect for the beach and splashing around in the sea.
If going straight from beach to bar, pop on a little Garnier Skin Naturals B.B. Cream Miracle Skin Perfecter (£7, Boots) and top off with some pressed powder to take off the shine. Or if you're going for a summery dewy look, leave the powder.
Quick hair idea: High messy bun secured with a big clip, or pull hair through a hair doughnut and secure with a pack of grips.
To stop your face melting in the heat, it's good to start with a primer. Clarins Instant Light Complexion Perfector (£21.05, Clarins) can be used by itself, or under foundation. It'll keep your make-up in place for longer and you won't have to keep retouching throughout the day. It even does a good job of minimising blemishes and dark circles.
I love Clinique's Redness Solutions Makeup SPF 15 (£23, Clinique), which is great in the heat, especially if you've caught the sun a little on your face. You hardly have to use any and the SPF 15 and antioxidants help keep redness away. Finish with a neutral eye shadow and lip balm for a sophisticated day look.
Quick hair idea: Blow-dry and leave free and natural, or plait overnight in french braids, unravel in the morning and scrunch with a little gel/mousse for relaxed waves.
While most people enjoy a relaxing holiday, others spend their breaks trekking up mountains or cycling through streams. Try to avoid wearing too much make-up, or any at all if you're staying active! If you do need a little something on your face, keep it simple with a little waterproof mascara (see Beach babe) and a quick sweep of L'Oreal True Match Minerals (£14.29, Boots). This mineral foundation is especially great for travelling, as its brush-in-the-lid means less mess. It'll give you flawless skin in seconds if you can't face going bare-faced. Keep topping up that lip balm too to ensure your lips stay hydrated.
If you're sailing the waves, keep your tresses in check with TRESemme Salon Smooth Serum (£4.79, Boots). Use a tiny amount on your ends to prevent frizz and fly-aways, but avoid using on your roots as it will look greasy.
Quick hair idea: Side-swept plait with hair pinned off your face.
All of the above!
If you've had a heavy night on the sangria, No7 Beautiful Skin Vitality Eye Roll-on (£12, Boots) reduces bags and tired-looking eyes. If you pop it in the fridge too, it's even more refreshing in the morning.
I'm one of those unfortunate people who gets prickly heat on holiday, so I'm often walking round sporting unsightly red rashes on my chest and arms. If you're prone too, spritzing cold water onto skin helps, as well as keeping cool and wearing breathable materials such as cotton. It's also good to keep rash-prone areas out of the sun. To combat the itchiness, rubbing on some calamine lotion or aloe vera has soothed my skin in the past.
I swear by the Body Shop aloe vera calming facial cleanser and toner (£7 each, Body Shop) at the end of the day. I've always had quite sensitive skin and this works a treat, keeping my skin moisturised and blemish-free. It removes all my make-up, which is always important to do before bed, even on holiday!
However, if you're feeling lazy or perhaps had one too many, you'll be forgiven for using face-wipes. Boujois make-up remover wipes (£3.99 for 25) have loads of moisture and hardly require any effort to wipe off your make-up. Make sure you moisturise overnight too, Nivea Soft tube (£2.45, 75ml, Boots) is great value for money and is small enough to carry on the plane. It's a lovely three-in-one moisturiser (face, hands, body) that I never leave the house without.
So if you're lucky enough to be jetting off to the sun this summer, don't forget your beauty essentials and look gorgeous with minimal effort, whatever your holiday choice.
