Additives are substances added to certain foods for several reasons; to prolong shelf life, enhance flavour, texture and appearance and to slow or prevent chemical reactions. Common additives used in foods are emulsifiers, acids, and anticaking and glazing agents. There are many additive-free food products available which are deemed a more natural and less harmful option, as the chemicals added to foods are seen as potentially harmful to the body.
