2012 colour of the year announced

Are you curious to know what colour trends will be big in 2012? Well, Pantone think they have the answer.

Tangerine Tango, a vibrant orange is the colour of 2012, according to the Pantone Color Institute.

The fiery hue is expected to chase the winter blues away next year by injecting new energy and boldness into the economy.

So be prepared for the invasion of flaming orange outerwear, dresses, shoes, handbags and even eyeliner!

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute said: “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

The annual forecast for the coming year’s leading colour is based on what Pantone thinks shoppers want and need. This is influenced by fashion shows that took place in September for spring/summer 2012, news events, fabric shows, pop culture and consumer habits.

Eiseman explained: “Part of what we do is look at the zeitgeist. We have to look at everything in the world around us. It's not an arbitrary choice.”

She said the reason for orange is because of its association with urgency and calling to action. It is a contrast to last year's hot-pink shade, Honeysuckle, which was supposed to channel cheerfulness and nostalgia.

Over the past several years, designers have taken a liking to orange and the shade has slowly crept its way onto the catwalks across major fashion capitals. And next year, the attention seeking Tangerine Tango is expected to be a take centre stage with men’s and women’s fashion.

Our first impressions weren't too positive. It’s hard not to think of a traffic cone or easyJet when you first see the hue. But, when teamed with warmer shades, the double T could make for an adventurous winter wardrobe.

High street fashion favourites Zara, H&M and ASOS already have jumpers, coats and accessories in the colour, and as we move out of winter it won’t be long before the tangerine items seen on the catwalk make their way onto racks for the warmer season.

Along with Tangerine Tango, Pantone's Solar Power (bright yellow), Bellflower (lilac) Caberet (Rosy red), Sodalite Blue (navy), Cockatoo (blue-green), Sweet Lilac (blossom pink) and Margarita (lime green) are spring 2012’s top colours.

Eiseman added: “Consumers look to spring for renewed energy, optimism and the promise of a brighter day.”
